In August 2006, SELEX-Gematronik was awarded the contract for the provision of four METEOR 500S S-Band weather radar systems to the Caribbean Regional Weather Radar Project.

The four new meteorological radars will be located in Barbados, Belize, Guyana and Trinidad. The primary objective of this program is to provide high resolution Hurricane warning information within the region. The data from new radars shall be combined with the data from the existing Gematronik radars in Martinique and Guadeloupe along with the radar data from Jamaica and Dominican Republic (if it is available) to provide a Caribbean composite radar images.

Another objective of the program is provide hydrological mapping for flood mitigation.

The high performance METEOR 500 S with a 8.5 meter antenna will be delivered with latest generation GDRX signal processor and RAINBOW data processing system.

The scope of works will also include; communication equipment, support facilities, training, installation, maintenance and logistics support for an initial period of three years.
