Tyrone Sutherland

Co-ordinating Director

Mr. Tyrone Sutherland is the Coordinating Director of the Caribbean Meteorological Organization, which has its headquarters in Trinidad and Tobago. CMO is a specialized agency of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) that coordinates the joint scientific and technical activities in weather, climate and water - related sciences in sixteen English-speaking Caribbean Countries.

Mr. Sutherland was head of the Saint Lucia Meteorological Service until the early 1980's and then served the Canadian Weather Service for ten years as a Senior Meteorologist and Severe Storms Specialist. In 1992, he joined the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretariat in Geneva as a Scientific Officer in its Tropical Cyclone Programme, and was subsequently appointed as the Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General of the Organization.

Since becoming the CMO Coordinating Director in 1999, he has been the Permanent Representative of the British Caribbean Territories with WMO and was elected to the WMO Executive Council that same year. Mr. Sutherland was elected Second Vice-President by the 14th WMO Congress in 2003 and re-elected by the 15th congress in 2007. He is currently listed as one of the longest-serving members of the WMO Executive Council. He is well recognized for his strong support for developing countries and Small Island Developing States in the Caribbean and around the world and for the transfer of appropriate technologies to the Caribbean.
